4 States that will Legalize Marijuana Last

Posted by on Mar 9, 2016 in Uncategorized |

With recreational marijuana already legal in some states, more and more states are fighting for the . Some are making significant steps while others have such a strong stand against legalization. Let us look at the states that will take a very long time to legalize marijuana:

Marijuana Legalization State by State

A quick look at history will teach us a few lessons here:

In 1933, the federal government lifted the prohibition on alcohol consumption. Some states like Mississippi continued to prohibit alcohol, even 3 decades later. You could not drink in a bar in the state of Kansas until 1987. Most of the counties in Kansas are still ‘dry’ or ‘semi-dry’ to date.

The lessons…

This example from history communicates very strongly. Even if Congress repealed prohibition of pot by the federal government, some states will never legalize it.

Factors to consider in legalization

Two factors can be used to determine the likelihood that a state will legalize marijuana:

– Public opinion

– Access to non-legislative political remedies

These two factors have to be present, at the same time, to create a pro-legalization environment. They are mutually dependent.

  1. Kansas

Well, this is no surprise. Kansas has proven to be very slow when it comes to legalizing drugs. Remember the 1987 lift against alcohol prohibition?

In a 2014 poll, only 31% of Kansas residents supported the legalization of cannabis. 33% further said its possession should be regarded as a felony. In April 2015, the residents of Wichita had voted for an initiative by the municipal for the decriminalization of weed. The state’s attorney general asked the Supreme Court to overturn it, almost immediately after the vote was cast.

  1. North Dakota

North Dakota, being an agricultural state, approved industrial hemp production. Well, maybe this is because they have seen how lucrative it is. Their Canadian neighbors seem to be reaping obscene profits.

Interestingly, the state’s residents are hesitant, when it comes to legalization. Their legislature shot down a bill aimed at a study on the legalization of medical marijuana. Efforts to put a medical marijuana initiative on the ballot were watered down. Only 47% of the populace supported medical marijuana. Only 24% of the residents supported legalization.

  1. South Carolina

The lawmakers in South Carolina introduced 2 bills in 2015: the legalization of medical marijuana and decriminalization of hemp. The bills have not been passed yet. Before this, the legislature had passed a no THC, high-CBD cannabis oil bill. A poll in July 2015 revealed that only 53% of the populace supported the legalization of medical marijuana.

  1. Utah

The only bill that has been passed in Utah is a no-THC, high-CBD oil bill. A poll in March 2015 showed that 72% of the population supported the legalization of medical marijuana. The legislature killed a medical marijuana bill, soon after, though.

The legalization of marijuana will take very long in some states. Where the population is more open to the concept, legislation waters this optimism down. Where legislation allows for the decriminalization of hemp, the population remains conservative. Borrowing from history, it is safe to conclude that cannabis will never be legalized in some places, even centuries later. The discussion is still centered on medical marijuana. What would happen if anyone brought put the issue of recreational marijuana? A public outcry, without a doubt.

The 3 most profitable cannabis businesses to start

Posted by on Nov 6, 2015 in Uncategorized |

Many people who are interested in investing in cannabis-related business would be very much interested in getting to know the most profitable businesses in this industry. This is because there is so much money involved in this industry right now and also due to the fact that significant growth is expected to occur in this industry in the coming days. Here below are some of the 3 most profitable cannabis –related businesses that you can start:

-Cannabis testing

Cannabis testing is soon going to become an important requirement in the cannabis industry. This is because all the states that have legalized recreational and medical marijuana require cannabis testing facilities. In addition, all other states that will eventually legalize recreational and medical marijuana will require marijuana testing facilities. Right now, not many people are interested in setting up cannabis testing facilities because it is not as attractive as starting a retail outlet like those , or industrial gardens. In addition, there is no branding for cannabis testing right now. This means that if you establish a lab and start a strong branding campaign, you could easily become the ‘gold standard’ of weed testing and gain a very strong competitive edge over the limited competition that is there currently. You can establish a cannabis testing company that is going to set the standard in the cannabis testing industry so much that people will always prefer buying cannabis products tested by your company. This has not happened yet and you could be the trail-blazer in this line of business.

-Cannabis entertainment

Investing in a cannabis cafe can be one of the most lucrative business ventures you can start in the cannabis industry. Cannabis cafes are very popular with marijuana consumers, especially those who are single. This is because they only need to pay a small door fee and go in there and consume as much weed as they want in a social environment. For the same reason that people frequent clubs and bars in order to socialize over bottles of beer, so would cannabis consumers want to go out and socialize with other like-minded people. Cannabis cafes can also sell marijuana and marijuana-based products, but concessions and door fees will generate a lot of profits on their own. In areas that limit or ban retail establishments, cannabis cafes can be a great business idea.

-Cannabis consulting

This is certainly big business in the cannabis industry. People who are experts in this field get paid huge amounts of money to share their ideas and thoughts. Today, several people are offering consultancy services in this industry and are being paid huge amounts of money. However, they are not necessarily the best at what they do. A large number people who are offering these services today might have

knowledge of the  weed but without being very knowledgeable about the cannabis industry. The cannabis industry has a lot of aspects that one needs to be aware of in order to succeed in it. Others have a big understanding of the cannabis industry but they lack standard business skills such as time and money management, as well as overall vision. This means that there is a great opportunity for people who have both traditional business skills as well as marijuana experience to enter into this lucrative field.

TIP: No doubt you’ve noticed that the green rush has brought about a frenzy of people opening up dispensaries and this is why I recommend looking at the ancillary services one can provide because there is less competition. However, you can still open up a dispensary, all you have to do after the set up is the correct marketing, customer service and have a unique selling point. One dispensary making waves is Mary Jane’s Patch and you should model yourself after it because the owners are positioning it as one of the  Colorado.

Marijauan Risks in Young People

Marijuana can actually expose your kids to certain risks. This is because part of the growing marijuana industry is associated with cannabis edibles. Cannabis edibles are candy, drops, or food containing pure THC, the oil that is extracted from cannabis plants.

The danger behind cannabis edibles is that they do not look, taste, or smell like cannabis. This makes them a potential danger for young kids.

It is not possible for kids to know whether they are eating cannabis edibles because they cannot easily tell the difference between them and other edibles. Many of them look like ordinary candy. This means that they can eat then unknowingly or eat them in large amounts, leading to unintended consequences.

According to Dr. George Wang, who works with Denver Health Medical Center, the danger associated with cannabis ingestion is reflected in the increased number of calls coming into the Colorado Poison Centre. He is quoted as saying there is an increase in the number of young kids who are unintentionally exposed to marijuana.

The real risk to young kids lies with the possibility of ingesting high doses of THC contained in the cannabis edibles. For instance, a single bite of chocolate truffle has 15 servings of THC in it. This is equivalent to 3 puffs on a joint. Essentially, what this means is that if a young child consumes a single unit of truffle, the amount of THC ingested would be more than significant. Some of the kids admitted in the Colorado Poison Centre had very severe symptoms which necessitated their admission to the critical care unit. According to Dr. Wang, a large percentage of cannabis calls to the Poison Centre line involve young kids aged from 2 to 4.

Symptoms of THC overdose in kids

The symptoms of THC overdose in kids include:

In addition, THC is known to produce serious anxiety attacks as well as psychotic-like symptoms if ingested in high doses. Cannabis is also metabolized in a different way when ingested as opposed to when it is smoked. Ingested marijuana takes time to take effect, but can produce more severe symptoms.

Another thing that is likely to cause concern is that the easy availability of child-friendly cannabis edibles could entice young kids to try the drug.

Other ways of exposing kids to cannabis

Children can also be exposed to marijuana if their mothers use weed while pregnant or breastfeeding. Some doctors are saying that a number of women confess to using weed for morning sickness during their pregnancy. Other parents are known to allow their children to smoke weed just simply because it has been legalized.

It is the fact that children´s central nervous systems, brains and bodies are still in a developmental phase which means that cannabis can cause more harm to them than the benefits it brings to adults. Under no circumstances should a young child be continuously exposed to the active ingredients in marijuana. Just because weed may have medicinal or recreational benefits for the over 18s does not mean it will do the same for children.

The Risks of Marijauana

What is the way forward?

In order to reduce the potential health hazards of young kids ingesting large amounts of cannabis unknowingly, there should be strict restrictions on the packaging and formulation of marijuana edibles. In addition, such restrictions should ideally be implemented immediately when a particular state legalizes cannabis for recreational or medicinal use.

On a brighter note, the states of Colorado and Washington, which were among the first states to legalize marijuana, require manufacturers of cannabis edibles to package them in child-resistant packaging. These two states also require all cannabis products to be labelled with their respective serving size as well as a warning to “keep out of reach of children ’’. However, these measures are not really enough to fully protect young kids.

Essentially, more needs to be done in order to reduce the likelihood of people confusing marijuana products with other regular products. Government authorities should also ensure that all cannabis products’ dosing is consistent.

As in the case of all legal intoxicants, the risk of exposure to young children is high. It is not enough for there to be regulations imposed by the law, although, if marijuana were federally legal, it’s likely that there would be an increase in security measures and education about the risks. Even if this were to take effect, parents must be extremely vigilant if children are in the same environment as their choice of recreational marijuana. Proactiveness in keeping the products out of reach is key and perhaps a candid conversation with the little ones will go a far in keeping them out of harm’s way.

All that being said, marijuana has been found to effectively reduce the ammount of epileptic fits in some young children and has also cured other ailments. The ultimate way forward is to become informed, do your research and seek professional advice.

Here’s is a great TED talk that explores the curing effects of marijuana in children, as well as the risks:

Wonderful Hemp

Posted by on Sep 25, 2015 in Uncategorized |

Hemp is a natural, long-lasting, fibre obtained from the tall-growing species of the cannabis plant.

Hemp seeds for industrial use

Hemp seeds ready for sowing

Typically it is produced from the leggy Sativa strains which have few psychoactive properties. These plants can grow from between 15 to 20 feet tall and it is the bast or layer just inside the outer skin that it used to produce the coarse fibre we know as hemp. The coarsest fibres will be used for rope-making, footwear, animal bedding, clothing and,as we shall see, a host of other products. It is truly a versatile plant and one that has been of enormous aid to mankind.

Who would have imagined that the cousin of the one that takes you on a trip, relaxes you or takes away your pain and cures your ills is also an ingredient of a building material known as Hempcrete?

hempcrete construction block

Designed to build, not to smoke

This is essentially the hurds, or the fibre sheath around the core which is ground and mixed with natural lime to make a concrete-like material. An interesting fact is that the hemp plant absorbs carbon dioxide as it grows. It retains the carbon while giving off oxygen, thus providing us with the essentials of life. Theoretically in one cubic meter of hempcrete wall, as much as 165 kg of carbon can be bound up and imprisoned while it petrifies over the course of time. The hempcrete blocks look very similar to the typical grey concrete blocks known as breeze blocks, or more boringly – CMU´s (concrete manufacturing units).

Hemp fibre is often blended with other natural fibres to make clothing. Silk or cotton would used with about 55% of hemp fibre. The result is a natural breathable and very wearable material. None the less important is the food value of this crop. The leaves can be eaten raw in salada and are also used in the production of a tofu style preparation and hemp ice cream. But the seeds of the plant are the most commonly processed. Flour is made from them and used in baking. They are crushed to make hemp oil which is full of proteins and very nutritious. The seed when sprouted can be used to make hemp milk which is like soya milk. There is a hemp, nut-style, butter, even hemp waffles.

The seeds are a great source of dietary fibre but also of essential minerals like zinc, magnesium and iron. A 100 gram serving provides more than 70% of your daily protein requirements. The amino acids it contains are similar to those found in milk, meat, eggs and soy. Its essential fatty acids include linoleic, alpha-linolenic, oleic and other poly-unsaturated fats. It is no wonder that hemp has been grown as a crop since man started planting seeds. (It´s also ironic that those who are so against the legalization of mrijuana have probably been using this “cousin” without realizing it all their lives!) Anyhow, none of these foods gets you high even though they come from the same plant. The levels of THC are negligible. However, marijuana is also used in cooking for recreational and medical applications, but that is another subject and another article.

4 Reasons for Increased Interest in Marijuana financing

Posted by on Sep 24, 2015 in Uncategorized |

In today’s competitive world, there are two types of ventures that have really captured the interest of high-end ventures: marijuana and tech start-ups. There is a fast increase in the number of platforms especially for the former type of start-ups. Even Silicon Valley veterans have not been left behind in the financing of hemp. Why all the interest?
1. Potential for growth and innovation

Money to be made from marijuana

Maybe it does grow on trees

The main reason for the spiking interest in the financing of hashish is the potential for growth and innovation. According to SFGate, the cannabis industry has shown a growth rate of 74% over the last year. It has become a $2.7 billion industry. The state of California accounts for half of the pot industry. If this drug is legalized in this state, the revenue in this industry will easily double.

2. Existing demand
Marijuana financing is further influenced by the fact that the industry is already fuelled by an existing demand. For instance, Founders Fund recently offered $75 million in funding to Privateer Holdings, a firm that has a number of cannabis investments. The Founders fund was started by Peter Thiel, a co-founder of  PayPal, one of the largest online money transaction platforms.
Even celebrities have joined the bandwagon to finance this fast-growing industry. One of the celebrities who has done this is Calvin Broadus, Jr., Snoop Dogg. He is said to be putting together a $25 million special fund with the sole purpose of investing in hashish startups.

3. Correct timing
The timing is indeed right for investment in this upcoming industry. There is venture funding from different sources. The startups in this niche are referred to as potpreneurs. One of the largest marijuana startups, Leafly, which offers a platform for the review of various strains of hashish, has raised more than $12 million in marijuana funding from over 100 individual investors. This company is licensed by the state of Minnesota. According to CrunchBase, there were about 30 venture investments in marijuana startups.
4. Regulation
There are already a number of states that have legalized cannabis. If more states follow this trend, there will certainly be an increase in funding in this potentially lucrative industry.
Despite the potential for growth and innovation in this industry, there are a number of challenges:
– Regulation
Marijuana financing could be affected if there is a reduction in the number of states that legalize this drug.

Banking services
Since cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, money earned from cannabis cannot be banked. The growers and vendors have a lot of cash on hand, which increase the risk of theft. However, an entrepreneur founded MPS international, an armored-courier service. MPS is designed to serve legal marijuana dispensaries which need to transport pot and cash. According to MPS CEO, Michael Julian, some of their clients make between $200,000 and $300,000 monthly. They have nowhere to keep all the money. This is where MPS comes in. It transports and securely stores all the green. Most of the employees in MPs have a background in law enforcement.
Another way MPS helps potpreneurs is by removing the smell of bhang from the money. They literally wash the money. They use a machine that removes the molecules of hemp to ensure that it does not have the smell of cannabis.
Marijuana financing is on the rise, and this trend is likely to continue. In a few years, the pioneers might be billionaires.
